What leads and drags the world are not machines, but ideas.
- Victor Hugo
We all know that New Zealand is a small country that's full of big ideas - many of which are brewing in the minds of some of our youngest, brightest people.
Having begun as a start-up ourselves, we believe that sometimes all it takes for an idea to ignite is a helping hand.
That's why we were excited to come together this past weekend to mentor Team Youi; a group of eight high-school students elected to take part in the Entrepreneurs in Action 2017 event, run by Young Enterprise and sponsored by Massey University and NZTE.
The event was a weekend-long business competition that gave like-minded young entrepreneurs a taste of the fast-paced business world, with a focus on innovation and global trade. Students worked one on one with company mentors to learn valuable leadership and workplace skills while developing their own business ideas.
Two of our leaders, Peter Broome (Head of Operations NZ) and Megan Dobson (Car Claims Investigator), inspired, encouraged and guided Alice Yorke, Max Lawton, Ashley Pearce, Amelia Paunga, Melissa Foppen, Kelvin Mao, Clara Schroeder, and Eda Ye as they pitched their way through an Innovator's Challenge on Saturday, and a Trade and Enterprise Challenge on Sunday.
Peter Broome was especially impressed with the level of interest and commitment from Team Youi, commenting, “It was so nice to see that these kids, who represent the future of New Zealand, are so full of big ideas and innovation that will help this country grow and thrive."
In true Dragon's Den style, Team Youi presented a complete product concept, including research, marketing, and financials, to a panel of judges. Their idea for a pure New Zealand spring water in a push-to-disperse bottle that releases a capsule of natural, organic fruit juice concentrate, won the Trade and Enterprise Challenge and helped earn their rightful place in the finals.
We are so proud to announce that all eight members of Team Youi won a $3,000 scholarship to Massey University. We're even prouder to say that having witnessed the passion, innovation and work ethic of the next generation, the future really is in good hands.
